A flat plate solar water heater is the older, simpler technology in solar water heating, and for a lot of Indian homes it is still the right one. This Anu Solar 200 LPD model runs two flat plate collectors feeding a 200 litre tank, sized for a family of four to five, and it does the job with fewer parts and less that can go wrong.
A flat plate collector solar water heater works differently from an evacuated tube system. Instead of glass tubes, it uses a sealed absorber plate under glazing that soaks up sunlight across its whole surface. In strong direct sun, which most of India gets for eight or nine months of the year, it heats water reliably and holds up for fifteen years or more with almost no maintenance. There is no tube to crack, no vacuum to lose. The tradeoff is honest: on cold early mornings and through heavy monsoon overcast, an FPC system warms up more slowly than ETC. If your family bathes at 6:30am in December, ETC suits you better. If you bathe later in the day, FPC gives you the same hot water for less money.
The tank here is built heavy rather than coated. Galvanised iron at 3.5 mm, more than twice the thickness of the glass-lined tanks in Anu's ETC range, with a sacrificial anode rod fitted to fight water hardness up to 600 ppm. The anode rod is the working part of that protection, it corrodes so the tank does not, and it can be replaced during servicing. The outer tank is galvanised and powder coated. Anu backs both the tank and the panels with a 5-year warranty each.
One thing to be straight about: 600 ppm is the limit. If you are on borewell water in Bangalore or Hyderabad running harder than that, and much of it does, this is not your product. Anu's glass-lined ETC 200 LPD is rated to 2000 ppm and will last where this one will not. Get your water tested, or send our team what you know about your supply and we will tell you which of the two you actually need. Selling you the wrong tank costs you more than it makes us.
Three things to confirm before you order. Your terrace needs at least 9 feet by 7 feet of clear, unshaded space, and two flat plate panels take a bigger footprint than an equivalent tube system, so measure properly. Your overhead tank or Sintex must sit at least 6 feet above terrace level, since this runs on gravity. And if you have a booster pump on your terrace, this product is not for you, you need a pressurized model. For monsoon stretches, an electrical backup coil is available separately.
